Challenge

The main challenge faced by the Port of Barcelona was the environmental impact of emissions from docked ships running their engines to generate power, significantly contributing to local air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. This project aimed to decarbonize port activities and improve air quality, aligning with global and regional goals for fighting climate change. The OPS is part of the broader Nexigen plan, which seeks to electrify the entire port, reducing emissions and making the port more sustainable. The overarching goal is to significantly cut emissions, reduce air pollution, and set a precedent for Mediterranean ports, with the long-term vision of creating a carbon-neutral terminal by 2040.

Solution
  • Developed under the Nexigen plan, the OPS was installed at the BEST terminal to power docked ships with renewable electricity, allowing them to turn off their engines.
  • A 3,000-volt medium-voltage network and connection points were set up to handle up to two ships simultaneously.
  • The system was tailored to meet the specific operational needs of container ships, providing 8MW of power with frequency adaptation.
