Challenge

The Port of Seattle's goal with the Maritime Innovation Center (MInC) is to modernize the historic Fishermen’s Terminal while fostering maritime innovation and sustainability. By restoring and upgrading the Ship Supply Building into a 15,000-square-foot facility, the MInC aims to support emerging maritime companies in solving industry challenges, securing technical and financial backing, and transforming ideas into viable solutions. The project aligns with the Port's objective to be the Greenest Port in North America by meeting the Living Building Challenge standards, ensuring the MInC generates its own energy, captures water, and processes waste sustainably.

Additionally, MInC will serve as a hub for the annual Innovation Accelerator Program, driving workforce development, job creation, and economic growth in the blue economy. The facility will also enhance public spaces around Fishermen’s Terminal, promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion while inviting the public to appreciate the working waterfront's value.

Solution

The Maritime Innovation Center (MInC) at Fishermen’s Terminal in Seattle, a flagship investment by the Port of Seattle, aims to foster maritime innovation and sustainability. Transforming the historic Ship Supply Building into a 15,000-square-foot facility, the MInC will host incubators, accelerators, anchor tenants, and fabrication and event spaces. Meeting the rigorous Living Building Challenge, the MInC will generate its own energy, capture water, and process waste, showcasing features like photovoltaic energy production and rainwater capture. Partnering with Maritime Blue, it will support emerging maritime companies, workforce development, and blue economy opportunities. The MInC will house the Innovation Accelerator Programme, mentoring startups in developing ocean-based climate solutions. Public space improvements will enhance community engagement and inclusivity, aligning with the Port’s equity goals. The MInC aims to create jobs, boost the local economy, and position Seattle as a leader in maritime innovation and sustainability
